Reception for Liu Shiming: Cutting through Moutains to Bring in Water: Sculpture

Special hours d’ouevres + wine reception celebrating Liu Shiming, his work, and the inaugural Liu Shiming Foundation Scholarship.

Liu Shiming (1926 - 2010) was a member of Central Academy of Fine Art's first generation of Chinese sculptors. He grounded his work in a Chinese local context, developing a folk art style within the Chinese tradition through ancient modeling methods. In 2018, the Central Academy of Fine Arts established the Liu Shiming Sculpture Museum, which is dedicated to researching and investigating Liu’s artworks and their art historical meaning. The exhibition at the Welch School Gallery includes bronze and ceramic sculptures on loan from the Liu Shiming Foundation in New York City.

The Liu Shiming Art Foundation has generously donated to the development of the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design sculpture, ceramics, and textiles programs at Georgia State University with a new scholarship that supports graduate students in the medium. In the coming academic year, Liu Shiming will have a retrospective in the Ernest G. Welch School Galleries.

"This generous donation marks a new chapter in our three-dimensional studio program," shared Welch Director Joseph Peragine. "Students recruited with this scholarship will carry on the legacy of Liu Shiming whose work has made a lasting impact on the modern, Chinese Sculpture community. We are grateful to be able to share the gift of the artwork with The School of Music in a space where hundreds of College of the Arts events are hosted each year. We look forward to sharing student success stories with the Liu Shiming Art Foundation for years to come."

Gallery events are free and open to the public.

About the Gallery

Established in 1970, our venue is the most dynamic visual arts space in downtown Atlanta. The galleries host exhibitions featuring works by national and international artists, local and regional artists, as well as by Georgia State students, faculty and alumni artists. We incorporate presentations, artist talks and panel discussions into the gallery programming, providing students with personal access to professional artists and scholars. Graduating B.F.A. and M.F.A. students have a thesis showcase exhibition in the Welch School galleries.

In addition to the official school galleries, the school has student-run gallery spaces Cage Space & Gallery 650. Cage Space is a window-front gallery at Edgewood and Piedmont avenues and hosts exhibitions organized by the Art Student Union. Gallery 650 is a white-walled space on the top landing of our 6th-floor studio walkway. It is used by classes for critiques, student clubs for group shows and can be reserved for the staging and documenting of work.
